On September 21 and 22, the magnificent original drama "Hou Debang" was staged at the Qiushi Hall of Peiyangyuan Campus, Tianjin University. More than 3,000 undergraduates and masters students watched the drama. 

Hou Debang was a teacher at Tianjin University, famous chemist, and pioneer and founder of the Chinese modern national chemical industry. He fully devoted himself to the cause of science and his alkali-making method has greatly improved the efficiency of industrial alkali production. As an innovative scientist, he cultivated numerous outstanding scientific experts for China.  

The drama "Hou Debang" is sponsored by China Association for Science and Technology and produced by Tianjin University. Hou Debang's scientific career was full of ups and downs, but he never gave up despite the difficulties around him. The drama praises the patriotism, dedication and responsible spirit of Chinese scientists and presents to the audience a magnificent epic with a dramatic plot. 

In 2017, the drama "Hou Debang" was re-created as a grand performance for the celebration of the 120th Anniversary of Tianjin University to reproduce the lives of modern, patriotic and self-reliant scientists. 

“The so-called master is actually a kind of scientific spirit”, said Mr. Xu Ruisheng, director of the drama when he talked about the inspiration for the creation at the rehearsal of "Hou Debang". “All Chinese have patriotic feelings. Industrial salvation was the pursuit of intellectuals of Hou Debang's generation. Our generation, your generation and even future intellectuals, may have different specific pursuits, but we have one of the most fundamental similarities: the struggle for the development of our country and the happiness of the people, which reflects the spirit of Hou Debang and the spirit that will not be change for generations.” 

Hou Debang is not only a great mentor for all staff and students, but also the pride of Tianjin University. Despite the sacredness of the sea and the stagnation of the world, the spirit of seeking truth from facts that Hou Debang embodied will be passed down from generation to generation.
