The fourth China College Students’ “Internet Plus” Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition hosted by Xiamen University witnessed the success of Tianjin University as one of their teams won a gold medal for the high-speed transfer atom-robot project. This was the first time for a team from Tianjin to be awarded the coveted gold medal marking a huge improvement for the city. Another TJU team with their project focused on the detection and analysis of animal epidemic disease garnered a silver medal.
Liu Songtao, the initiator of the high-speed transfer robot project, graduated from the School of Mechanical Engineering, Tianjin University. Liu Songtao and his team are devoted to parallel robot designing and its industrialization, putting their design into establishing the Tianjin Chenxing Automatic Equipment Co, Ltd. The company’s flagship robot, the “atom-robot” surpasses the accuracy of its international counterparts and breaks the status quo in the Chinese industrial robot market which has long been monopolized by foreign companies. This kind of robot has been employed in the food, beverages, medicine, electronics and chemical industries. The total number of atom-robot shipments is currently over one thousand and the annual sales figure amounts to 50 million yuan, leading to the increase of its market share percentage.
“General Secretary Xi has pointed out that technology is a country’s sharpest weapon,” said Liu Songtao, “Establishing an innovative cooperation is the best way for me to repay our country and society as a party member. Our next step is to build a world -class industrial robot company.
Du Kang, who initiated the detection and analysis of the animal epidemic disease project, graduated from TJU’s School of Precision Instruments and Optoelectronics Engineering. His team established the Tianjin Boshuo Technology Co, Ltd in 2014, which specializes in product development diagnosis and test using various technologies, including immunodetection, molecular detection and mass spectrometric detection.
As the top national innovation and entrepreneurship competition, it attracted 2.65 million students from 2,278 universities in 650,000 teams, more than the total number of participators during the past three years. This competition witnessed 376 teams making it to the final round on the spot, chasing the gold medals in the main track competition, the “youth dream journey” track competition, the international track competition, and the competition for the final five. Fifty-eight teams are entitled to a gold medal in the main track competition and 18 teams are entitled to a gold medal in the “youth dream journey” track competition. Besides Tianjin University, the Tianjin University of Commerce was also awarded a gold medal in the “youth dream journey” track competition.
Tianjin University, among the first batch of universities assigned by the Ministry of Education to set an example for innovation and entrepreneurship education reform, breaks the limitation between this new kind and traditional academic education through years of effort by encouraging students to integrate innovation and entrepreneurship with innovative ideas born of academic knowledge. The gold and silver medals awarded this time, which are attributed to the combined efforts of students and teachers, prove the success of the university’s innovation and entrepreneurship education.
