On October 27, the inaugural meeting of the Emergency Resuscitation and Disaster Medicine Specialist Cooperation Platform based on the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Hospital Cooperation Alliance was held by TJU’s Academy of Disaster Medicine, and was approved by Chinese Hospital Association (CHA).

During the inaugural meeting, Professor Hou Shike, Dean of the Academy of Disaster Medicine at Tianjin University, reviewed the preparatory work of the Platform.

Vice President Wen Hao of the CHA briefly introduced the Alliance.

TJU’s Vice President Zhang Fengbao and many other representatives attended the meeting.

Although the world’s economy has been developing rapidly since the beginning of the 21st century, natural disasters, accidents and public health emergencies happen frequently, such as the Indonesian tsunami in 2006, the outbreak of the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), the Haiti earthquake, the Nepal earthquake, and the Wenchuan earthquake, causing heavy casualties and economic losses. The disaster medicine specialty is facing a daunting task in this regard, and its priority remains efficient rescuing to ensure minimum losses and the maintenance of social security.

Currently, due to the poor communication among domestic medical and rescue institutions, the efficiency of emergency relief is low, which has led to failed rescue attempts and treatment. In order to solve the existing problems and to develop the discipline of disaster medicine, the Academy of Disaster Medicine has sponsored and brought together over 30 domestic organizations and hospitals to establish the Platform.

The Platform is expected to integrate medical resources at home and abroad and work out targeted emergency relief systems for different areas. With the Platform, the SCO Hospital Cooperation Alliance will be able to facilitate scientific research, academic exchange and technological cooperation among its member hospitals to improve medical treatment and other issues of the SCO member countries.

The Academy led by Professor Hou and his team is the very first Academy of Disaster Medicine in China, which is well-equipped with excellent faculty team, a solid foundation in scientific research and rich practical experience. The Academy compiles disaster medicine textbooks, sets standards and carries out academic activities and scientific research.

The SCO Hospital Cooperation Alliance was established in Beijing in May, 2018, whose first recruitment included 74 Chinese and 7 overseas hospitals.
