Recently, the 2018 “FLTRP·ETIC Cup” English writing, reading and public speaking contests concluded successfully in Beijing, marking the official conclusion of the 2018 “FLTRP·ETIC” Uchallenge. Cai Wenting and Wang Xiaona respectively won the second prize and the third prize in writing contest, Kong Wenjie won the second prize in reading contest, all presenting TJU students’ English compatibilities in the national competition field.
In the writing and reading contests, 180 contestants from 30 provinces, municipalities, autonomous regions and Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR) stood out from more than 510,000 people and competed fiercely online. The argumentative title of the writing contest was introduced by a paragraph about “the scientific experiment should pay attention to the result, not the experimental means”, which required the contestants to expound their own positions and discuss in detail on this point of view. The narrative part, first introduced through a picture, which required the contestants to give full play to their imagination to write a narrative based on the painting. In the reading contest, four parts of “Read and Know”, “Read and Reasoning”, “Read and Question” and “Read and Create” proceeded in an orderly way. With ingenious design, it comprehensively examined participants’ scope of reading, the ability to obtain information and analyze and judge, the ability of logical reasoning and extraction and application.
Cai Wenting, Wang Xiaona and Kong Wenjie first stood out in the Tianjin University trials on October 10th and 12th. Then, they participated in the semi-final of 2018 “FLTRP·ETIC” English Writing and Reading Contests in Tianjin held on October 27th, 2018, and won a special award to represent Tianjin in the national finals. During the competition, the School of Foreign Languages and Literature of Tianjin University prepared reference books and arranged the advisers for them. Wang Lisong, Deputy Dean of the School of Foreign Languages and Literature and a lecturer of College English Teaching Department I, devoted his attention to helping students improve their English writing and reading skills. In the national finals, Cai Wenting and Wang Xiaona respectively won the second prize and the third prize in writing contest. And Kong Wenjie won the second prize in reading competition. After the contests, Wang Xiaona majoring in translation, said that it was lucky for her to participate in the national English writing contest, which not only broadened her horizons, but also provided an opportunity to show herself, to learn from other excellent participants and constantly improve her speculative and imaginative ability from the innovative test questions. She encouraged classmates to read, practice more, and take an active part in participating in writing, reading and speaking contests, to cultivate international thinking, and to integrate English learning into their daily life.
Jointly sponsored by the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, College Foreign Language Teaching Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education, the ELT Advisory Board under the Ministry of Education and National Research Centre for Foreign Language Education, the “FLTRP?ETIC” Uchallenge establishes a platform for national university students to show their excellence and challenge themselves, and provides a medium of communication for the development of higher foreign language education in China. Tianjin University has been undertaking the semi-final of contests in Tianjin, encouraging, supporting and guiding students to participate in, which not only fully improves the students' comprehensive application of foreign language, but also provides rich practices for foreign language teaching, promoting the reform and development of foreign language teaching in colleges and universities.
