Recently, Tianjin University’s Office of Academic Affairs and the School of Foreign Languages and Literature held the Tianjin University English Speech Contest on the Peiyang Park campus. The contest judges included: Associate Dean Mr. Wang Lisong, Head of the College English Department I Ms. Jiang Bin, Deputy Head of College English Department Ⅱ Mr. Liu Yang, Deputy Head of Graduate Student English Department Ms. Xiao Zhenfeng, Deputy Head of The English Department Mr. Dong Yuezhang, and two faculty members of College English Department I Ms. Ge Liying and Ms. Hao Shan.
The topic of the contest is “The Stones.” Participants are required to give a speech about the given topic, showing their use of English skills. After two rounds of fierce competition, a total of 20 students entered the final round.
The final consists of two parts: a prepared speech and an impromptu speech. In the first part, the participants showed the eloquence of their English speech through fluent oral English, great enthusiasm, and appropriate body language. In the second part, the participants randomly chose one of the given topics. After brief, careful consideration, they launched smoothly into their impromptu speech allowing the audience to feel the charm of their language skills as well as their insightful ideas and broad vision. Their excellent performance won applause from time to time.
In the end, two students won the grand prize, four the first prize, six the second prize, and eight the third prize. The winners of the grand prize went to Gu Yuncheng and He Jia. The first prize awards went to Wu Chenyu, Wang Xiayu, Wang Haoyang and Yan Yi. The winners not only received prizes, but also gained friendships and improved their English skills through the contest. The grand prize winners and the first prize winners will compete on behalf of Tianjin University in the 21th College Students’ English Speech Contest of Tianjin, also known as 2018 “FLTRP ? ETIC Cup” English Public Speaking Contest (Tianjin Division) .
