At the award ceremony of “2018 World Internal Combustion Engine Congress” held on Nov 11th, Yu Guopeng, PhD graduates from the State Key Laboratory of Engines (Tianjin University), won the first prize of Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Award of the Chinese Society for Internal Combustion Engines in its first year. The award-winning dissertation is titled Research on High Efficiency Bottom Cycle System for Cascade Utilization of Afterheat Energy of Large Temperature Difference in Heavy Diesel Engines, which has been instructed by Professor Shu Gequn and Researcher Tian Hua.
Dr. Yu Guopeng, the doctoral graduates in Grade 2017 of the school of Mechanical Engineering, majors in power machinery and engineering. Under the support of one of the National Program on Key Basic Research Project (973 Program) chaired by his instructor Professor Shu Gequn, he has launched theoretical and experimental research on high efficiency bottom cycle system technology in terms of the afterheat feature of large temperature gradient in Heavy Diesel Engines. With his doctoral dissertation, key problems in system design and performance evaluation method for afterheat recovery of internal combustion engines has been solved, the stacked coupling system with multi-stage thermodynamic cycle is established to improve the efficiency of afterheat utilization and a model machine of afterheat recovery with two-stage coupling cycle was developed for 243kW diesel engine so that an increase of 6.1% has been witnessed in the efficiency of diesel engine, reaching internationally advanced level. Based on this doctoral project, a total of 5 academic papers have been published in SCI Zone 1, among which 3 are ESI Most Cited Papers and each one has been cited over 100 times in SCI, enjoying widespread high praise among international academic community. At present, Dr. Yu Guopeng is pursuing Postdoctoral Research at the University of Glasgow in UK.
The Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Award of the Chinese Society for Internal Combustion Engines is the highest level for doctoral thesis in the field of internal combustion engines in China. Founded by the Chinese Society for Internal Combustion Engines, this award aims to strengthen the cultivation of high-level innovative talents in internal combustion engine industry, improve the quality of doctoral education in the field of internal combustion engine engineering, inspire and encourage students to devote themselves to the R & D and innovative application in this sector, thereby advancing technological progress and innovation in this industry. In this first selection in 2018, 7 dissertations have been awarded nationwide. In addition to the only first prize won by Tianjin University, there are 2 second prizes and 4 third prizes. The winners are from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Tsinghua University, Beijing Institute of Technology, Dalian University of Technology and Huazhong University of Science and Technology.
