Tianjin University Holds the Symposium on Robot Olfaction

 Campus

The School of Electrical and Information Engineering in Tianjin University held a symposium on robotic olfaction in Conference Room 236, No.26 E Building, Wei-Jin Road Campus on the afternoon of November 15. At the invitation of Professor Meng Qinghao who is the director of the Institute of Robotics and Autonomous systems, Professor Achim J. Lilienthal of ?rebro University in Sweden, Professor Cheng Lei from Wuhan University of Science and Technology, Professor Li Gigong from Tianjin Vocational and Technical Normal University and other experts visited our school and attended this conference. They focused on the "robot olfaction research status and development trend” with the associate professor Zeng Ming and the lecturer Ren Chao and other experts of our school .The scholars from various fields of robotics communicated and discussed at this meeting, which nearly 40 teachers and students attended from schools of automation, microelectronics and precision instruments.

Professor Meng Qinghao, the director in the Institute of Robotics and Autonomous Systems, chaired the seminar. In his speech, Professor Meng welcomed the visits of Professor Lilienthal and other experts to Tianjin University for academic communications, and briefly introduced the basic situation, research direction and achievements in the Institute of Robotics and Autonomous systems. Then Professor Lilienthal gave a wonderful 2-hour themed report at the seminar. Professor Lilienthal first introduced the sense of smell about mobile robot from three aspects which were "studying the meaning of robot smell”, "the research status of mobile robot olfaction" and "the research challenge of mobile robot olfaction", and then focused on the research work and representative achievements of his team in robot olfaction.

Professor Lilienthal's report was lively, interesting and easy-to-understand so that it stimulated teachers and students participating in this meeting of great interest. Therefore, experts and participants communicated and discussed lively on the theme of the topic which meant that the academic atmosphere on site was extremely strong.

On the morning of November 16, Professor Lilienthal conducted further discussions on the research work in the field of robotic olfaction of the Tianjin University team with teachers and students from the Institute of Robotics and Autonomous systems in Conference room5, area E, No. 26 teaching building. After the meeting, they visited the laboratory of the Institute. In the afternoon, Professor Lilienthal visited the School history Museum and the new campus of Tianjin University with accompany of the director, Meng Qinghao.

Professor Lilienthal is a well-known robot olfaction expert internationally who has been engaged in research in this field for more than 15 years and has made an industry-recognized contribution to the development about the robot's sense of smell.

The two sides between Tianjin University and ?rebro University have maintained friendly exchanges since his first visit to Tianjin University in 2009.The two sides conducted discussions on the exchange of scientific research personnel, joint cultivation of graduate students and joint application of projects deeply, which laid the foundation for more cooperation in depth.
