World Chinese Debate Ranking rules:
Points are given mainly based on the international debate competitions in the last two years. Different points are given for different achievements in different competitions. The larger the scale is and the more difficult the competition is, the higher points the contestants will get in the final ranking. The main competitions in the last two years are the CUPL International Chinese Debate Competition for University Students, the World Mandarin Debating Championship, International Chinese Debating Competition, Chinese Debate World Cup, “Shan Hai Cup” International Debating Competition, Asia-Pacific Intervarsity Chinese Debate Tournament and “Hua Xia Cup” International Chinese Debating Championship.
The TJU Debate Team has attended several international Chinese debate competitions and achieved outstanding results for two years running with one champion and one runner-up. The experience and achievements they gained from the competitions have enriched them and laid groundwork for today’s victory.
In April 2017, the 7th World Mandarin Debating Championship was held. The number of contestants reached a new high, with the number of debate teams exceeding 300 for the first time in the Chinese mainland. Among numerous competitors, the TJU Debate Team overcame all obstacles and finally sat in the victor’s thone. In the group stage and the quarter-final, they stood out with an overwhelming victory, and in the finals, they defeated the debate team from the University of Melbourne with a score of 6:3 and won the championship.
In Nanjing in 2018, the TJU debate team behaved as excellently as ever. They reacted quickly to the situation and brought out sparkling discourses. Although they lost the championship to Nanjing University in the finals, one of the TJU debaters was awarded “the best debater” as well as “the popular debater”.

Their efforts
No one wins the fame of “No. 1 in the world” without countless hours of hard work and sweat, nor does the TJU Debate Team. They know how to speak eloquently and silence their opponents but it is difficult for them to dwell on their efforts and diligence.
No one was born to be a champion. Only after they fight through all the difficulties along the way can they win the laurel.
Members of the TJU debate team are all students of Tianjin University. In addition to the daily accumulation and preparation for debate competitions, they devote themselves to study just as other students do. Therefore, the biggest challenge they are faced with is how to manage their time. They have to prepare for more competitions with limited time and they also have to make a choice when there is a conflict between study and competitions. But even in such situations, they keep their schedules in order, prepare for debates, and never slack off in their studies.
They say that rigorous logic and fluent expression are the most rewarding gains they can get during their debate career. With rigorous logic, they can make sense of every strange question; with fluent expression, they can showcase their talent in front of 20 million people.
For different competitions, each debater's identity is different. Therefore, each competition is a new task for the TJU debaters to challenge themselves. They continue to work hard, accumulate their knowledge step by step, challenge new heights and finally become number one in the world. However, they are still working hard without ceasing because their motto is “conquering opponents and conquering yourself; keep growing and becoming talented”.
They want to persuade not only all the opponents in the world who seek to become stronger but also themselves.
