The 2nd Excellence 9 (E9) Young Teachers' Innovation in Teaching Competition was hosted by the Beijing Institute of Technology, bringing together experts and teachers from 9 universities of the Excellence 9 universities. Tianjin University young teachers achieved good results in this teaching feast, receiving 2 first prizes, 3 second prizes and 3 third prizes.
The competition aims at promoting resource sharing, mutual benefits and win-win cooperation among E9 member universities, improving the quality of undergraduate students training, improving the teaching innovation ability of young teachers, building an open platform in which faculty can exchange teaching experience, display teaching model so as to improve their teaching quality and achieve educational development. The "student-centered" innovation was highlighted in this competition. Form this competition, young teachers can establish a "student-centered" talent training concept, discard the outdated teaching model, and build an efficient classroom with in-depth learning. Topics of innovation in teaching include: instructional design based on the model of inverted classroom, ability-oriented research-based curriculum development, results-oriented instructional design and strategy and other “student-centered” teaching innovation designs.
With the elaborate organization of TJU, 5 TJU teachers distinguished themselves from 69 candidates. They are: Ding Bohui from the School of Mechanical Engineering, Chen Xiaolong from the School of Electrical and Information Engineering, Xu Jie from the School of Civil Engineering, Wang He from the School of Architecture, and Lv Sixuan from the Law School.
In the finals, candidates fully demonstrated their own teaching styles and innovative reforms through video displays, presenting teaching plans, interactive questions and so on. After the race, the “innovative flipped classroom characterized by a combination of general education and professional education to improve originality and design ability of students majoring in science and engineering” of Wang He and Xu Jie’s “ smart classroom characterized by Rain Classroom + partial inverted classroom of building structure testing courses” (Rain Classroom is a new smart tool for teaching jointly developed by Tsinghua University and XuetangX) have been fully recognized by the judges and experts, earning the first prize. Ding Bohui’s” engineering graphics practical teaching model facing robotic creative design”, Chen Xiaolong’s "Electrical Diversified Learning Quality Control Design and Practice with Flipped Classroom" and Lv Sixuan’s clinic-style flipped classroom legal education with” online Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) learning and offline practice”.
This teaching innovation competition has established an extensive teaching communication platform between the judges and the players and teachers of different disciplines. The participating teachers have shown a high-quality teaching content and modes. One judge said, “They will be master teachers in the future!” The competition holders attached great importance to innovative design of teaching to weed out poor-quality classrooms and promote profound, difficult and challenging high-quality classrooms. Only by this, can young college teachers shoulder the mission and responsibility of developing higher education in the new era.
