 Campus

Tianjin University is to lay out a blueprint for the next decade in scientific and technological development during its Science and Technology Conference: by 2030, the university will have reached world-class level in terms of overall scientific and technological competence.

The planned discussions include various topics: challenging unexplored areas and developing significant new fields of research, selecting the "top ten" scientific issues in such frontier domains as molecule+, terahertz science, tissue and neural engineering and stem cell biology. The conference focuses on the need to achieve original and significant results and to strive for China's State Natural Science Award and to focus on common technologies in key areas, advanced and revolutionary technologies and modern engineering technologies. Moreover, the meeting explores the issues of training strategic scientists and setting up innovative teams in several fields such as artificial intelligence, engineering safety, synthetic biology, energy, resources, manufacturing, materials, brain science and information, and endeavors to take the lead in some fields by 2023. It also aims to strive to build a number of technological research institutions in collaboration with military and civilian groups by 2025. The next step is to speed up the building of a “national team for scientific and technological innovation” that also involves the ability to undertake important missions for China. Furthermore, the delegates highlight the financial resources needed to support vital scientific research costing more than 10 million RMB (about US$1,500,000).

Tianjin University aims to improve its competence in scientific and technological innovation in the next five years. To do so, it is planning “three outlines” for: important scientific research directions, major scientific research platforms, and innovative teams. It is implementing “three plans”: the “summit plan” for comprehensively strengthening basic research, the “support plan” for serving China's major strategic needs, and the “assistance plan” for reforming scientific research management and evaluation mechanisms. Moreover, the university is making efforts to achieve “three improvements”: the improvement of innovation ability, the improvement of the ability to serve China’s strategies and the improvement of the support systems.

In the next five years, Tianjin University is on the way to achieving a remarkable improvement in its research level in innovation ability It aims to make breakthroughs and in doing so winning the first prize of the National Technology Invention Award and Scientific Development Award. To better serve China in its strategies, Tianjin University takes its responsibility in leading an innovation-driven base by doubling annual research funding and making breakthroughs in the construction of national high-end think tanks. At the same time Tianjin University will spare no effort in scientific research, thus enriching the country’s strength with representative achievements and contributions.
