On December 14th, the award ceremony of the 17th "Chunhua Cup" Essay Competition of Tianjin University was held successfully in the reporting hall of No.33 building. This ceremony was co-held by the Department of Academic Affairs of Tianjin University, Training Base of Quality-oriented Education as well as Department of Chinese Language and Literature in School of Foreign Languages and Literature. Distinguished guests such as Jia Guoxin, deputy director of the Department of Academic Affairs, Wang Lisong, associate dean of School of Foreign Languages and Literature, together with Ma Zhiyao, academic leader of School of International Education, and all the teachers of the Review Group are invited to present at this ceremony. The host of ceremony was Yue Jing, director of Department of Chinese Language and Literature.
Since the commencement of this essay competition, to which both Department of Academic Affairs and School of Foreign language and literature had attached great importance and students from every school and department take an active part in it. The difference from previous years is that the scale of participants had expanded from undergraduate to postgraduate, which meant that it was a real school-level literature competition. Nearly 200 compositions were submitted to the competition, and after careful review, there are 4 first prizes, 8 second prizes, 15 third prizes, and 33 honorable mentions were selected in both literary work and academic dissertation divisions. During the ceremony, Teng Aiyun, the lead assessor of literary work division and Wang Yufeng, the lead assessor of academic dissertation division respectively made comments on all compositions.
Teng Aiyun stressed that when engaged in writing, we should focus on content more than skills. A great literary work was supposed to be a perfect integration of content and style. And exquisite writing pattern and excellent writing skill should help us to convey the content of our works. Besides, she told that the Mr. Shi, written by the first prize winner He Yongdi, and Ganger Su, writer by the second prize winner Qin Yifei, were appreciated by literary editor of Beijing Literature, which meant that "Chunhua Cup" Essay Competition is being widely known by the society as a whole.
Wang Yufeng said that the value of academic dissertation not lies in peculiarity or novelty, but creativity, especially the creativity that keep pace with social development. Besides, the value also lies in the strictness logic and its certain layout and format.
During the ceremony, Liu Zhixiu, a student from School of Foreign Languages and Literature proposed her own opinion and shared some experience in writing. She commented that only if the writer experienced life by himself and deeply involved in the world, then to all the readers, his literary works could be endowed with profound thoughts and real feeling.
After awarding ceremony, Ma Zhiyao, academic leader of School of International Education, delivered a speech on Literature’s Function on Nourishing Emotions. He explained literature in terms of four aspects that literary work should leave the reader with sympathy, gratefulness, thanksgiving and forgiveness. He said that a real literary work should abandon the rigid writing skills and try to move the readers heartedly. After the lecture, Mr. Ma communicate sincerely with students on literary writing and answered their questions in detail.
