The 60th Anniversary of the Computer Science Major at Tianjin University was held on December 16. Prof. Wu Jianping (Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering), Mr. San Xiangjun (former member of the Standing Committee of Tianjin Municipal Committee, Secretary of the Political and Legal Committee, Deputy Director of the Standing Committee of the 16th National People's Congress, President of the Municipal Law Society), Professor Gregory Abowd (Regents’ Professor and J.Z. Liang Chair in the School of Interactive Computing at Georgia Tech) Zhong Denghua, President of Tianjin University, and Tan Xin, the Vice Presidential Leader of Tianjin University attended the meeting. Representatives from more than 60 universities in China, representatives from Administration Departments and other schools of Tianjin University, alumni representatives, and all faculty and students attended the celebration. The celebration was presided over by Hua Jianfeng, secretary of the Party Committee of College of Intelligence and Computing.
President Zhong Denghua pointed out in his speech that this 60 years of the Computer Science Major at Tianjin University is the epitome of great efforts of the faculty working at Tianjin University. It is the embodiment of the innovation of Tianjin University. He pointed out that Artificial Intelligence has become a strategic technology that leads a new round of scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation, and also is an important strategic resources for promoting technological leapfrog development and overall productivity leap. Computer Science is one of the most dynamic, innovative and influential disciplines in the field of Artificial Intelligence. It is hoped that College of Intelligence and Computing can be the leader of this area, continue to deepen reformation, and integrate the Emerging Engineering Education Concept into the whole process of education and teaching. He encouraged College of Intelligence and Computing continue to work hard and contribute to the goal of building a world-class university.
Li Keqiu, Director of College of Intelligence and Computing, looked back on the history of development of Computer Science Major at Tianjin University, and emphasized the spirit of Mr. Xu Zhenyu, founder of Computer Science Major at Tianjin University and other faculty members who are determined to persist on their work. Then he introduced the achievements of College of Intelligence from the perspective of talents training, faculty, and academic characteristics, scientific research achievements and discipline construction. The future plan of the College is proposed.
Prof. Wu Jianping pointed out in his speech that Tianjin University and Tsinghua University have always maintained a good and close cooperative relationship as one of the earliest universities to develop Computer Science in China. He hoped that two universities can continue on the close cooperation, jointly participate in the construction of computer industry in China.
Gregory Abowd from Georgia Tech, representative of overseas universities said that he is very happy to be here for the celebration. Georgia Tech has maintained a good relationship with Tianjin University. Both universities will continue to promote cooperation and launch more degree programs and train more outstanding students.
Mr. San Xiangjun, representative of the alumni, looked back at his student’s life and work experience at Tianjin University. He said that all the faculty worked hard to establish Computer Science Major, and now all of us shall work together for a better future of computer science.
Prof. Shu Yantai, representative of retired faculty, Prof. Hu Qinghua, representative of young faculty, and Zhou Guangmeng, student representative, delivered their speech and made their wishes in the Celebration.
Faculty and students representatives from College of Intelligence and Computing jointly performed for the celebration. It is reported that from November to December, 2018, College of Intelligence and Computing organized series of commemorative activities to celebrate the 60th Anniversary.
