Four Master Students from One Dormitory Realize Their Space Dream

 Campus

Every year during the graduation season, a number of amazing “Dormitories of Straight A Students” emerge in the university. One such dormitory this year has transformed it from a “Straight A Student Dormitory” into a “Dormitory of Students to be Engaged in Space Work”.

The four students in the dormitory are about to graduate in January 2019. They gave up the popular or high-paying companies’ admission notices and chose the aerospace industry as a new starting point of their life. They are Masters students of the School of Precision Instruments and Optoelectronics Engineering: Peng Chengxiang, Chang Songhong, Wang Jinwang and Yanyu from Dormitory room 515 in Building No. 41.

Two years ago, Peng Chengxiang, Chang Songhong, Wang Jinwang and Yan Yu finished their undergraduate study at Tianjin University and chose to stay to further their postgraduate study. During their postgraduate study, they happened to become roommates. Since they had a common goal, they became academic partners, discussing the problems encountered in the experiments and providing solutions together. They worked together as a team in competitions, wrote programs until late at night and achieved good results. In their spare time they climbed Mountain Tai, visited the Great Wall, and enjoyed the great rivers and mountains of the motherland. "Our daily life in our dormitory is ordinary, however we get on well with each other and this helps us make progress and develop together." Wang Jinwang said.

During this year's graduation season, future choices became a frequent topic discussed in Dormitory 515. During his undergraduate study, Peng Chengxiang often attended the speeches and lectures related to national defense science and technology. He was deeply touched by those who are willing to contribute to and relentlessly pursue the Chinese dream and he was determined to join the national defense cause. His enthusiasm for the national defense cause also infected his roommates. Chang Songhong, Wang Jinwang and Yan Yu also participated in various activities including visiting famous aerospace-related companies, seminars and lectures. When attending a symposium at a space institution, one of the TJU alumni impressed him by their sense of accomplishment and pride that they unconsciously revealed when describing their work. "At that time, the alumni's eyes were all 'sparkling'. It is exciting to be able to do what you like and to gain a sense of accomplishment. We also believe that the aerospace industry needs young people and our future is promising." Wang Jinwang said. This year, Peng Chengxiang and Chang Songhong joined the China Academy of Space Technology, and Wang Jinwang and Yan Yu joined the Second Institute of China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation Limited.

“There are many choices during job hunting. We hesitated when choosing between the high salary of private enterprises and the dream of aerospace.” The four students in Dormitory 515 said about their career choices: “The love of the current job, and the pride and sense of accomplishment of serving the national defense will become the source of our success through persistence. Aerospace is the forefront of high-end technology and a symbol of the country's advanced technological level. We have a long way to go."
