 Arts and Culture

On January 6, 2019, Wang Di, a famous artist of dough figurine sculpture, together with 14 artists from Tianjin Folk Literature and Art Association gave lectures on Chinese traditional culture at Tianjin University.

During the event, the 14 artists donated their masterpiece works to Tianjin University. These works included dough sculpture, clay sculpture, paper-cuts, kites, gourd flowers, prints, micro-carvings, engraved porcelain, silverware, bird cages, wooden pots, enamel scales, guqin and an ancient egg-shaped, holed wind instrument. All were outstanding representations of Chinese folk-art treasures. In the future, they will be displayed in the Chinese Traditional Culture and Art Inheritance Base at Tianjin University, for the purpose of exhibition, teaching and cultural research.

Tianjin University is among the first batch of “Chinese Excellent Culture and Art Heritage Bases” supported by the Ministry of Education. In recent years, the university has actively offered special traditional culture courses such as "Yangliuqing Painting Inheritance and Painting Practice", " Art Practice of Zhang’s Clay Figurine" and "Guqin Performance" to enrich students' aesthetic experience and broaden their horizons.

Wang Di has been engaged in the dough figurine sculpture art for more than 20 years. She has been awarded International Master of Folk Arts and Crafts from UNESCO. Her works are considered graceful and elegant, proud of their strong national genre and her own unique style. The elegance and subtleness of her works are highly praised at home and abroad.

Through the decades of her artistic creation, Wang Di also developed formulated dough for such fine figurine sculpture. That is why her works last indefinitely and do not become mildewed or cracked and never deteriorate.
