International Volunteer Training Base Co-established with Cathay Future

 Campus

Recently, the international volunteer training base of Tianjin University’s College of Management and Economics was inaugurated. At the same time a ceremony was held to launch the course Voluntary Service and Practice. Xu Yue, Deputy Director of Cathay Future, Jeanne-Louise Riether, consultant of public welfare project at Cathay Future and an American educational expert, and Li Geng, Deputy Party Secretary of the College of Management and Economics attended the event.

To make the service of young volunteers more regular, professional and international, the College of Management and Economics collaborated with Cathay Future to establish the volunteer training base. The courses for voluntary training and practice were opened, and a platform for promoting concept of voluntary service was set up. Xu Yue and Jeanne-Louise Riether served as the tutor of the voluntary services.

The course of Voluntary Service and Practice offered four training courses and one voluntary practicum. Students who pass the course assessment will obtain two extracurricular credits and an International Volunteer Certificate authenticated by Cathay Future.

Li Geng pointed out that the spirit of voluntary services well matched Tianjin University’s goal to cultivate talent with a “love for home and the motherland” and the educational concept of the College. The College highly valued education through practice and volunteer service. It encouraged students to actively join in social activities and pay attention to social welfare. More than ten volunteer service bases have been established by the College. The College organized volunteers to help the left-behind children at Fengyu, Yunnan Province for three consecutive years. In 2016, the College applied for the Tianjin Venture Philanthropy Project, which provided solutions for local social problems such as children's education in Jizhou rural areas and farmers' income generation.

After the launching ceremony, the first class of Voluntary Service and Practice was given by Jeanne-Louise Riether. Concerned about the increasing numbers of migrant workers as well as left-behind and migrant children, Jeanne-Louise explained ways of helping those children.

In the months to come, the College together with Cathay Future will continue the training courses and practicums to guide students to better engage in public welfare and fulfill their love for home and the motherland during their dedicated volunteer service.
