Tianjin University’s team won first prize by virtue of the project “Room Service by Autobots” in the 2017 National College Students Mechanical Products Digital Design Competition that ended in Wuhan on June 4. The team, made up of three undergraduate students, Zhao Liangyu, Liu Zaiwei, and Liu Xiao, all from the School of Mechanical Engineering, stood out among the 99 teams from 42 universities and colleges.

With the theme of “Kitchens’ Revolution”, the competition centered on the design of robots for food production, food delivery, and tableware cleaning. The participants themselves needed to propose their own design criteria, define the functions and objectives of their design, and finally describe in detail how their robots could meet all the requirements of production, delivery and cleaning. The design process required a high standard of the students' all-round abilities such as a clear explanation of their ideas and the use of the computer aided design technology.

In the preliminary rounds, 360 teams from 82 universities and colleges competed to advance to the next round. In the final, the remaining teams were evaluated according to their product presentation, their defenses, and their on-site time-limited project design.
